Procedures
After consultation with one of our physicians or providers, you may require a procedure to further evaluate your medical condition. This may be an endoscopy procedure (such as bronchoscopy or endobronchial ultrasound) performed by one of our pulmonary specialists, or a radiology procedure (such as a CT-guided biopsy or thoracentesis) performed by a radiologist.
Pulmonary procedures are scheduled through our office and are performed at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. If you have imaging studies that have been placed on a disc, please bring them with you when you come for your procedure.
MLC physicians perform bronchoscopy to evaluate the airways for abnormalities (such as infection, inflammation, tumors, or bleeding) and to obtain specimens from inside of the lungs.

Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) is a specialized form of bronchoscopy that uses a technique called transbronchial needle aspiration to evaluate enlarged lymph nodes in the chest.

A radiologist uses images generated by the CT scanner to accurately insert a needle into a suspicious or abnormal area, allowing a sample to be removed for testing.

Using ultrasound guidance, fluid is removed from the pleural space (between the outside lining of the lungs and the chest wall), and then sent to the lab for analysis.
